Using Static FBML To Create Your Customized Fan Page

Facebook is a popular social networking medium as well as an excellent platform for businesses to brand themselves. However, the traditional Facebook page is somewhat bland and can look just like every other business fan page. This is where the application static FBML enters and helps the business page stand out from competitors by introducing customization features formerly impossible for Facebook users.

Static FBML stands for Facebook markup language and is a custom application found on Facebook which can permit custom images, backgrounds, videos and more to be displayed on Facebook. Like most applications on this social networking site, Facebook markup language can be found on the application tab. Businesses have different needs than personal users and the FBML allows them to insert their own personality into what might otherwise be a fan page that looks like every other page on Facebook.

Adding images to a Fan page and then making them clickable with a link leading outward is also possible using Facebook markup. Adding the basic html code to the box and then linking it outward was formerly impossible on Facebook. The static FBML application however is perfect for the fan page where news is hosted on the main site or product photos can be linked to descriptions on their site.

Static Facebook markup language is simply an application and option on Facebook which permits the user to add static html or CSS to Facebook and will display just as it would on a normal webpage. Unlike HTML editors the raw code without extra characters must be input into the box. Unlike the standard HTML page there is no need to add headers, meta-tags or any extra characters.

While this markup language is an excellent addition to any user who wants to individualize their fan page, there are a few things to remember when using it. Facebook columns display at a fixed width so it is important to make sure the videos and images are not over 560 px wide so they fit into the page. Videos and jpegs should be resized to fit the space. Facebook markup language will not allow javascript and although the code can be inserted it will not work.

Image names should be a single name with no spaces. If a jpeg name is two words, a hyphen should be used to avoid problems in display. While an image has no height limitations the larger a photo is, the longer it takes to load and scrolling is not user friendly.

The FBML application will normally accept simple HTML easily. When pasting code into the application box all tags should be closed and there should be no extra spaces or characters. Using the FBML application is as easy as using ordinary HTML but it requires clean code with no so called trash characters such as might be pasted from a WYIWYG editor.

Being unique on Facebook is much simpler with The Facebook markup language application. The business that wants to stand out and deliver their message to the visitor the moment they land on their fan page will find the FBML application invaluable. Static FBML is not available for groups or personal pages.
