Pet Person

So you’ve spent several weeks attempting to pick out the perfect domestic pet for your family. You’ve looked at pet dogs, chickens, rabbits, gerbils and guinea pigs. You thought about hermit crabs and fish but you ultimately made the decision to get a cat. Welcome to the life of a cat owner.

Needless to say getting a cat is absolutely great. I’ve had my fair share of cats and adore having a cat in the home. It’s a joy to sit in the early evenings with your cat quietly purring curled up on your lap. There is however one disadvantage to having a cat. Scratching and climbing.

As most cat owners will advise you having a new cat in the household could be a dangerous experience. If you’re not prepared for this it may come as a complete surprise once you discover one day that it appears as if the legs of your much-loved table happen to be torn to pieces. It looks like somebody has mauled them with a power saw.

Or maybe it’s your much-loved couch, or maybe the rug or the duvet. Or maybe you’ve come home one day to find your curtains in a heap at the bottom of your house windows with the curtain rail resting on top of them, since your cat has attempted to climb the drapes.

Unfortunately you have discovered that an impulse common to practically all cats is climbing as well as scratching. Don’t worry, it isn’t something confined to your cat, and it is not something which you’re likely to change. Pretty much all cats climb and scratch, it’s instinctive.

And don’t believe that if you discipline your pet every time you catch him at it that she will stop. It’s highly unlikely that smacking his feet or screaming at him or anything else will make him cease. It may make him cease scratching while you are watching but he’ll still do it while you are not observing.

You’re in very good company, this is a difficulty that has been found by millions of cat lovers. The good news is that there’s a remedy. It’s not penalising him and it’s not necessarily de-clawing him as a few would have you believe.

The answer is comparatively straightforward in many instances. You are able to purchase basic cat furniture called cat scratching post which are specifically designed to direct his scratching clear of your precious and expensive household furniture towards a dedicated scratching post where he can do all of the destruction he wants.

Sometimes it takes some effort to teach him to use it. It’s always better to start as young as feasible, and if your cat is still a kitten and hasn’t started scratching yet it’s nevertheless better to get him a cat scratching post now and get him started scratching in places you would like him to.

You will find all sorts of strange and goofy solutions to this problem online. However the best is just to get a cat scratching post, generally $30 or much less, and to educate him to use it and the wear and tear to the legs of your favorite table or chair will be at an end. Whilst, especially if he’s more mature, he might spend some time resisting it’s quite possible to teach the majority cats to utilize a scratching pole effectively.

The bad news is if you’ve just adopted a cat the chances of him leaving your furnishings alone are small, however if you buy him a cat scratching pole and teach him to utilize it damage to your household furnishings should be limited.
