Making A Dentist Your Two-Year-Old’s Best Ally
Good dental care begins at home. As soon as your kid starts having solids, she should set about brushing her teeth. By two, when she has a complete set of teeth, it is best suggested to take her to a dentist. At this age, kids easily develop dental caries principally because parents do not put proper attention to their child’s teeth, thinking these will still be supplanted with the permanent teeth anyway.
What parents don’t know is that dental caries make mealtimes for tots a bother. And this should not be, because it is during this time when toddlers need nutrition for their active play, and for the growth of their brains. Dental caries have been among the prime reasons children are malnourished. With a bad set of teeth, it is by nature harder to bite and chew one’s solid food.
Dental caries grow when tots stay on drinking milk from bottles, especially as means to still them to nap. What happens is that the toddlers store milk inside their mouth, therefore plunging the teeth into sweets for a lengthier time than helpful. Because of this, tooth decay can happen.
A dentist will suggest changing from the bottle to a sippy cup, or to taking out the milk close to bed time. If the baby relies on the milk to go to sleep, then this can be supplemented with water, so that water after a bottle of milk can wash all the sweetness and stickiness down.
A dependable dentist will also suggest applying fluoride liquid on the teeth to coat and fortify the teeth against dental caries. Sometimes, baby’s teeth are especially tender. Their molars have deep clefts, and these are the bacteria’s favourite camping ground. So it is fundamental for parents to encourage the toddler to brush her teeth, and to see the dentist during regular visits.
The idea of seeing a dentist can be horrible to a child. But most children with whom parents proactively talk to about dentists being friends will normally react with enthusiasm. It will also be helpful to show pictures of dentists just a week before the visit so the child can feel excited. And on the first visit, it will be good to have a tour of a dental clinic and to meet and greet the dentist, without any process done yet, just so the child can become comfy about sitting on a dental chair and opening her mouth.
