For Your Safety Make Sure Fire Suppression Systems Are In Place
One reason for strict laws regarding Fire Suppression Systems is because of the lack of sprinkler systems in the MGM hotel in Las Vegas about thirty years. Many people died in that fire that started in one of the hotel restaurant kitchens. There was an area of the hotel that was exempt from fire suppression sprinklers.
The hotel instead of paying the extra money to install them decided that if it was not required under law then they could get away with not putting them there. Many people died in that fire from smoke inhalation rather than due to the fire itself. Many toxic fumes rose to the upper floors because of the burning plastic and other man made products that easily caught fire.
Now because of the knowledge that sprinklers are needed in all hotel areas Las Vegas is one of the safest cities in the country and even in the world when it comes to fire suppression systems. But if you plan on staying in a hotel in another city make sure you ask some questions before checking in.
When you get to your room go over all the safety information. Take the time to check for the emergency exits. Look for the nearest stair way down. Do not wait for an emergency when there is chaos all around. That is not the time to try to find the exit. And if you hear an alarm do not take the elevator down. You have to use only the stair case to leave the hotel. And do not spend time taking anything except yourself and your family with you. Do not worry about your bags.
Ask if the hotel has regular fire alert tests. Ask if the hotel has a fire alarm policy and what you are supposed to do if there is a fire alarm. You can also ask if there has been a fire in the hotel recently. These are questions you might think are a time consuming process or that the hotel will think you are paranoid. But this is your safety and the safety of your family you are thinking about.
The hotel staff will of course not to worry. They will say they have the updated equipment and are within the fire code regulations. But you can also contact the local fire department for more information. They will direct you to the right agency to call for objective information about the hotel. This is your safety you are talking about here after all.
You also want to stay alert when you are in a bar or restaurant where drinks are served. There is a big concern about drinking too much and then driving. Which of course is a big problem.
But you can take extra precaution for your safety by staying sober when in a bar even if you do not plan to drive at all that night. Stay sober in a bar because if there is a fire emergency you want to be able to find the exits. If you have been drinking in excess and there is a fire you will have trouble making your way to safety.
