Building Solar Panels – What Solar Cells To Buy

When you’re planning to go DIY in making and installing solar panels, then you will need to purchase the parts of the whole system. This means that you will have to buy the cells, parts for the frame, the wires, batteries and inverters, among other things.

* There are cheap options If you want to save money in the long run while going green, you can do so with DIY solar panels. Ready-made panels can cost more than the total costs of the raw materials used to make them due to added production and labor costs.

Tabbed Solar Cells vs. Untabbed Solar Cells
The only difference between cells is that untabbed cells have not gone through the tabbing process. Tabbing solar cells is fairly simple, and the process involves attaching two strips of flat wire to each cell’s face.

Un-tabbed cells need to be wired and strung together in order to be of use in panels. If you are inexperienced in this type of job, there’s a great chance of overheating the cell and deeming it useless. And that’s money down the drain. Time is also a factor as you would need to wire 36 cells before making the actual panel.

Even though I’m experienced at soldering I still use tabbed cells because I’ve broken more than a few while tabbing them. Although tabbed cells are a little bit more expensive (usually around 20%) their ease of use cannot be surpassed.

By choosing untabbed cells over tabbed ones you can greatly save $100. If you think that $100 is worth several two or three more hours of your time, then buying untabbed cells might be for you. Imagine how much more you can save if you build more than one solar panels?

If you’re unsure of where to find solar cells, there are dealers, manufacturers, suppliers and contractors that can easily be located through the yellow pages. This is highly suggested for the inexperienced as you can be assured of the quality of the product, especially if it’s from a bigger company.

You can also find solar cells for sale online. But before making your purchases, make sure that you’re getting your money’s worth. There are a lot of scams going around regarding this booming market so have some patience and sift through the listings instead of buying the cheapest option listed.
